How to Plant Alfalfa Grass

Alfalfa grass is a perennial plant that grows about 2 to 3 feet in height. It has greenish-gray leaves and has blue and violet flowers. Alfalfa grass is most commonly grown for feeding livestock. It is high in nutrients for livestock animals, especially horses. Alfalfa grass is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. A field of alfalfa can yield significant amounts of hay for feeding livestock.

Instructions

    • 1
Select a spot to plant the seeds that drains well. Alfalfa grass does not grow well if the water does not drain from the site. If water pools in the area, it should be avoided.
    • 2
Remove any weeds, rocks or debris from the site with your hands. The area needs to be clear of anything that could interfere with the seeds' root systems.
    • 3
Add two to three large handfuls of fertilizer to the site. This will help enrich the soil so that the alfalfa grows healthy.
    • 4
Dig a hole that is no deeper than 1/4 inch. Alfalfa grass sprouts very easily and does not have a deep root system. The seeds can even be sprinkled on the top of the soil and covered with soil.
    • 5
Add 1/4 lb. of alfalfa grass seed for an area that is 5 feet by 5 feet. Do not compact or pat the soil because the seeds need oxygen to grow.
    • 6
Water the seeds until the ground is moist. Continue to water the alfalfa grass seeds once a week. Make sure the ground does not dry out, but be careful not to overwater the seeds.
